Catechumens participated in the Rite of Election on the First Sunday of Lent. The bishop confirmed their readiness for Christian Initiation. The catechumensnow become the Electexpressed their will to receive Baptism, Confirmation and the Eucharist.

On this Sunday, and the next two, the Church celebrates with them "the scrutinies", ceremonies whose purpose is to strengthen the Elect's ability to overcome temptation and purify their intentions.

Jesus' meetings with the Samaritan woman, the man born blind and the raising of Lazarus--all drawn from St. John's Gospel--have a central place in these scrutinies.
